About the Department

The Chemistry Department is situated in the North Campus of Bogaziçi University, has 25 faculty members and 9 teaching staff. The department houses 8 teaching and 18 research laboratories as well as 3 central instrumental analysis laboratories, and a computer laboratory.

The research areas most active in the department are archeometry, bioanalytical, colloidal, computational, electro-analytical, and medicinal chemistry, nanomaterials, natural products, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer science, and supramolecular chemistry. The focal points of research within these areas are applications of computational chemistry in organic and coordination compounds, asymmetric synthesis, biomaterials, biomolecular simulations and enzymatic mechanisms, biosensors, dental materials, drug delivery, heavy metal toxicity, living polymerization, nano-photocatalysts, polymeric nanocomposites and polymers from vegetable oils, and vesicles and nanopatterning. Archaeometry studies currently focus on ancient metallurgy and evidence for earliest use of milk in ancient societies.

Our department widened its research spectrum through recent additions of young faculty members with world caliber research in the areas of analytical surface science and laser spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, soft condensed matter and bioanalytical chemistry, and fuel cells and inorganic materials chemistry.

Our department has a strong commitment to educate young chemists and offers research opportunities in all the active research fields. While pursuing their Bachelor of Science degree, our students have the option to take part in our international exchange programs and spend part of their education in universities in the US and in Europe. Most of our BS graduates pursue graduate studies in our department or at academic institutions abroad. Our B.S. graduates and graduate students (Ph.D. and M.S.) are in an extremely competitive position in both the academic and chemical industrial job markets in Turkey. Benefiting from departmental industrial and academic contacts worldwide, our graduate students have been remarkably successful at home and abroad.
